Another book of the same generation, and still a useful introduction, is a businesslike survey of theories of literature by René Wellek and Austin Warren, Theory of Literature, 2nd ed. (). For a fairly recent, readable study, see Gerald Graff, Professing Literature: An Institutional History ().   Plagiarism is a serious charge to raise against a writer. I recall the incident with Stephen Glass of the New Republic when suspicions about his articles arose after he published Hack Heaven.
